Airborne
Jonathan Borofsky, a sculptor focused primarily on the human form, created “I Had a Dream I Could Fly” as a commission for the MFA in Boston in 2000. But in a recent interview with Carnegie Mellon Magazine, he stated that he is currently…
"...much more involved with outdoor projects. People who go to museums and galleries are a very limited number. But the people who walk around and through my outdoor sculptures every day could give less of a hoot about art. Here they are being forced to interact with a piece. This is a nice challenge for me to come up with things that work for people."
What a perfect expression of our mission at ArtRandomNYC! Borofsky’s desire to have people on the street interact with what is around them is what we hope that we and our readers will do with more frequency - open our eyes and take in what is all around us. Take, for instance, the two other images featured here. As we were walking around the Chelsea neighborhood in NYC, we spotted this wonderful glowing sculpture of a man seemingly leaping out at us from the second floor of a brownstone. It reminded us of Borofsiy’s flying sculpture, as did the delightfully playful retail display in this Nike store. If you look up when you walk, you never know what you’ll see. Art can literally be anywhere!
